Hey moms,
I'm having the problem where my teen son refuses to go to school. He says he's failing and it's too late to catch up. He's so smart though. It hurts me. I've always raised my kids kids with the knowledge of how important school is. I'm at the end of my rope. I think PINS is the on;y option for me now. Anybody with any advice, I would appreciate it greatly!

It's the end of the year, a time for a fresh start. Try a new school possibly a charter school or school on line. I had a daughter who had to do the online schooling but she found it easier than facing the personality conflicts at the local school. He may even be able to catch up.

You need to go into the school if they are not returning your messages. It has been at least 2 months since you knew about this issue, and you need to stop procrastinating and get on it. Your son doesn't want to go to school? Get him into a tech school, or make him get a job.

He will be left back a grade for sure in your new school, but kid needs to be doing something. Like a job. I cannot stress that enough.

PINS is a program for truancy. The only thing wrong with it is the kids usually end up in a home, from what I hear. I don't want that. You are correct, he would rather give up, but I won't give up on him. He's 15 years old.

I have no idea what PINS is and have seen you mention it. I would just sit down with him and talk with him about this. Not giving him really an option, but maybe making it sound like it is his decision. Also, seriously, during the summer make him get a job. He sounds like he would rather give up on things than try, and he needs a boot to the ass with a nice dose of reality. How old is he btw?

Yes, so am I. I have to make sure he goes to school for the next week before exams. Thanks so much! Your encouragement is great! I have been so stressed lately because of my defiant teen but I have to take control. It's really hard though. My only option left is to put him on PINS.

Glad you went in and spoke with everyone. I am shocked that they are willing to let him test out, and pass to the next grade, but hopefully that will push him to succeed by being given this huge opportunity for a second chance. Get his ass to school for the remaining of the year and encourage him to work.

Well I went to the school at 1 pm today. All went pretty good. There was the principle, asst. principle, social worker and counselor there. We talked for two hours. Their going to allow him to take his exams because they think he'll pass. I want to thank all who replied. I really appreciate it. I needed that giant "push" !!!! I have to stay on top of this, I can't turn back now.

Jodi,
Two months ago, I left voice mails for both the principle and assistant pleading for help. No one called me back. I received a phone call a few days ago regarding his detentions that he did not do. I then spoke to them about him not wanting to go to school. He failed every class, I have to say I agree it's pointless for him to even take exams. Even if he aced all of them, he would still fail the grade. The response that I got from school was to go downtown and file a petition for PINS for him. That's the only advice I got. No ... want to have a meeting ... no... let's try to help him... nothing. Just put him on PINS, let him screw up, be arrested or put in a "special school or home". He basically has given up on this year of school. I am transferring him to another one closer to home for next year but I'm worried I will get in trouble. I've even tried counseling, that didn't work at all. I'm at the end of my rope.
