Most likely because you weren't ready for him to be ready to go.
My son moved out this summer. It was awesome. He was ready to go, I was ready to have him be more independent. It's worked out great. He comes for dinner a couple times a week, and (of course) to do laundry, but he also is more enjoyable to be around, more helpful with his brother, and in general easier to get along with now that we aren't under the same roof.
Sounds like it's time for you to get involved in something for you! A new hobby, a book club, take a class or two...in other words, re-learn how to live without kids. It's very rewarding if you allow it to be!
