Teenagers and Responsibilities Around the House

I have two teenage children who need to pitch in more around the house. I want them to take on more responsibility around the house so they are better prepared when they go off to college (and the real world). Any suggestions of what they should take on in terms of household chores and how to implement this? They are 16 and 13 and give me plenty of resistance when I ask them to just set the table. Thanks.

You can set up a list for each child and list things they need to complete each day. Some things can be on the list and the list can be the same thing actually: clean rooms, make beds, make sure laundry gets to laundry area, help keep the common rooms neat, put things away when done. Getting more specific: Dishes, trash, actually do laundry, clean rooms, clean other areas of house, take care of pets (if have them), cook meal once a week (they each will need to know how to do simple stuff at least), wash and clean the car, check the mail, keep track of own things. You can do a different list for each day as all these chores do not need to be completed everyday outside of dishes, cooking, and picking up. You can give each child specific ones to do daily and switch it out.

One you have this list, you have to keep up with them. If they do not do the chores assigned them then there should be consequences such as missing out on going to a friends house (did not clean room can not go until completed), can not have tv time or computer time (exception homework) unless they do another chore or list. But make it fit the chore and so on. If they refuse totally, then do not do their laundry, do not clean their rooms, and so on. Maybe they will learn to do their work.
