There has to be a better way

11/14/2013 was my daughter annual check up and the Dr. informed me in front of my daughter that she was borderline obese. My daughter is 4'7 54 lbs when she heard what the doctor said her head dropped and tears rolled from her eyes. As a mother my instinct drew me to hug her and comfort her and I told my baby she's perfect. I would have preferred the doctor to write it down versus saying that. I understand she's doing her job, and I am thankful for the warning but there has to be a better way to communicate future warning concerning my child than this.

At 4 yrs of age, and the height and weight you gave, taking that into consideration w/dr saying she was/is borderline, just tells me she( dr) is asking you as her parent, to watch things. But I never did trust the charts that drs go by. I have 6 kids, ages 38- 17.....and they were always underweight/underheight according to their charts. I ignored the drs concern. Because I watched what they ate, saw their activities such as soccer, volleyball, b'ball, karate, etc. My oldest is definitely obese. But she's 38 and a grown woman. I spoke to her of my concern about her wt, yrs ago. She has 2 grown kids. After 18, she didn't want to listen. Your daughter needs to know from you of your love and support and to not worry. :-)

First off, my heart goes out to you both. Unfortunately, drs aren't trained to beat around the bush. That said, one....how old is your daughter? Two....if she is over 10, your daughter is better off to hear it and not be coddled. That could've been the reason her dr told you in front of her. Show your daughter to take it as a strong young woman that she is by example. Otherwise you are teaching her how not to cope when things come up. Good luck.

I agree no child should hear that kind of self esteem damaging information. Your/her doctor should know that hearing that kind of thing could damage a child's life. Have a talk with that doctor and ask that they don't do that again. Your girl sounds beautiful to me and you did the right thing.
