I have read that family meetings can be real beneficial for helping kids develop cooperation and respect, but I don't know where to begin. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Family meetings don't need to be formal at all.

Our family sit around the dinner table each night and talk while eating. We chat about our days and any problems that have come up that day. This is the time I usually bring up what my boys teachers have told me about school etc. It's also a great way to just connect as a family. My boys are 10.5 & 8 and my daughter is only 21 months. She sits with us as well, even though she doesn't understand what we are talking about :-)

How old are your kids? I also use this time for the boys to ask me questions about anything they would like to know. It's great that we have dinner as the distraction and there isn't any pressure to talk.

That's good that that format works for you, but I've read that there really needs to be a particular structure for a meeting to be effective. Some of the elements include having the meeting at a cleared table with no distractions, meeting once a week, discussing particular problems and coming up with solutions, and planning family activities.
The reason I don't know where to start is because there are issues in our kids behaviors (one is in 3rd grade and one is in kindergarten) that I would like to address.
