Thoughtful or Controlling?

My son is in piano lessons that my mom pays for. He has a toy keyboard to practice on which is not very good. We wanted to get him a piano or a nice keyboard. My mother kept informing me of this piano for $400 she saw, but we never went to see it. We weren't sure we wanted to spend that much money on a piano if my 6 year old wasn't sure he wanted to continue taking piano lessons. Well, she bought it without us looking at it. It is not very good, some keys don't work. They can't return it, only get store credit. I am afraid to tell her we don't want it, but at the same time I think she should of had us look at it first instead of just buy it on a whim. Am I being ungrateful?

No, you're good.
Be very straightforward. Tell her it was a lovely gesture, but it doesn't really help to have a piano that needs work/is broken. Suggest that maybe she can keep it at her house if she wants your son to play for her when he visits ;)
