Okay so the thumb sucking problem isn't with my adorable little girl it's with my fiance little cousin that I babysit He is 5 years old and I catch him sucking his thumb all the time! We tell him that if we catch him sucking his thumb that he doesn't get to go outside and play with his sister and their friends when we get back to their house and he doesn't get to watch t.v., or play his DS and nothing is seeming to help Im trying to come up with some good ideas if I don't see him sucking his thumb throughout the day and his mom and dad don't see him sucking it once he gets home! Please help it's getting kind of frusterating :)

Thumb/finger sucking is ok till it is not developed as an habit.

In case it turns out to be habit....getting rid of it is essential for tooth structurals..i recommend using thumbguard..which i used in my daughter's case..cotton stuff great to use & comfort wear. can find this at olx or quikr India

I have 3 kids. My old is 10 and a thumb sucker. She still sucks her thumb. Maybe there is a reason he ONLY sucks his thum around you. The one thing that made you fill secure was taken way, and then you where punished for using. How would that make you fill? He is 5 years old did you think maybe he does it because he is a) bored, b) insecure since you make fun of him, c) sad because he wants him Mom and Dad 3) tired. Maybe you just think it is not boy like behavor. Well my daughter sucks her thumb when she is bored, tired, stressed. She will be turning 11 in May and just know started only sucking her thumb at night and I am sure in her own time will break it when she is confident. I did not have to force her into anything, I don't want to build resistance. You will make him think coming to his Aunt and Uncle's house is NOT fun. Let Mom and Dad be the bad guys and break him of the habit it they want to. You be an Aunt and sitter.

Thank you so much ladies.... I have heard so many ways of trying to do things and nothing is seeming to work with them at their home My fiance was a thumb sucker himself and sucked his all the way until he was 13! CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT 13! And he finally stopped bc he got mono soo bad it hurt for him to suck his thumb. Isn't that horrible haha. I will try the finish nail polish remover and the sending him to a bed to lay down every single time he sucks his thumb :)

Well with my 3yr old he bites his nails so much. So one day I put fingernail polish remover on his feet and fingernails and told him how gross it was going to taste if he put it in his mouth, so he was affraid to do it. It lasted like 2 days, and I had to tell him I was going to do it again. So you could try that, or just hold the polish remover and have the qtip wet from water and just tell him its remover, and how nasty it is.

I think at that age they suck their thumbs out of habit. It seems they also tend to do it when bored, stressed, insecure or having trouble falling asleep so if you can figure out how to alleviate wht is causing the thumb sucking you'll make it easier on him. Putting a band-aid on te thumb might help him remember when he is doin it. It is more than likely a subconcious thing.

Hi Kaysie. I had a child in my dayhome who was a thumb sucker and everytime I saw him doing it I said "You must be tired. You can go find your bed." The only place I would let him suck his thumb was in bed. After being consistent for a few days it worked. He would stop as soon as I said that. Good luck.
