To my entrepreneur mom's, I need your help! I was recently laid off my job and decided to move forward by starting my own home based childcare business. I previously owned and operated an early childhood aftercare center for five years and have multiple degrees so I'm highly experienced and passionate about caring for children. I've been taking steps to set up in my home to care for ages 18 mo. to 4 yrs (may change this up if the gap is too big) and I have found tons of helpful research on the Web and by visiting other providers.

My concern is that I have two small children who both woke up sick this morning and I'm thinking how am I going to do this business when my children are not feeling well. We currently have a nanny and I decided to keep her as my assistant but what if she gets sick or doesn't show up like today? I thought about hiring two part time assistants but not sure if I will be able to afford it. Anyone else have these concerns or experiences running an in home childcare business? How do you handle this type of situation? Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks

- Kenya

I have a much smaller day care, so if my kids or myself gets sick I just close for the day. This does not happen very often and my parents are very understanding as they know that is just part of life as the same if their kids woke up sick that day and they had to stay home.

Other options you could do is having a list of people you could call on to sub. if you need. Stay home mom's or mom's that have a flexible schedule that would want to help out from time to time. Grandmas or an elderly person that enjoys kids. If you have a college near by you college kids are a great option for a subs list. You can get in contact with the early childhood department and get a list of students that want to do babysitting or subbing at local day cares. You will want to check your laws for what they would need to have done prior to subbing (background checks, medicals, etc.)
