My son Reuben, age 12, started at new school for children with learning difficulties. He is progressing well and he has gained so much more confidence. At the "regular" school he was reserved due to his disability. Unfortunately he has become more aggressive to the children at his new school. When asked why, he explains they are "weird" and just hated bigger boys picking on small guys. Took him to psychiatrist, who prescribed 54mg concerta to be taken am. 1mg respirdole two hours before coming off the concerta and then before bed 1mg.
Horrified when reading that it is an Antipsychotics DRUG.....it really was so upsetting.... my son is not so bad, maybe hit someone twice in his life. The principal at the other school was shocked to hear how Reuben has been through.
What should we do? If he does go on this drug it will give him a stigma!.
Any suggestions!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyone know the side effects!!!!!

Well, first of all, you took your son to a physician for a diagnosis, and treatment, so you probably should speak to that physician, or another for a second opinion, rather than polling the internet for armchair medical advice.

If your son has learning difficulties, etc, enough that it warranted him being placed in a specific school to handle his needs (which is awesome that you have that opportunity, rather than the mainstream schools that can be problematic for children with disabilities), and he's having aggression issues...he probably does need some medication or intervention of some kind.

One should never try to second guess a physician's diagnosis, nor should one arbitrarily adjust medications or stop giving them without consultation with a physician. You can cause more harm than good.
