To marry or not

Here is a question that popped up in a group and I think that everyone should be able to answer. Do you feel that getting married is an essential part of life or "just a peice of paper" as a lot of people call it. I am just looking for what everyone feels. Post Your thoughts

Marriage to me is a lot more than a piece of paper. I am now married the 2nd time around and I feel that this marriage is more of a spiritual connection than just 2 people living together. My husband is my heart and soul and I wanted the world to know. I willingly took his very strange surname and couldn't imagine spending 1 day apart.
I'm heading across the country in a few weeks for a work conference and I'm dreading it. I have never been away from him for so long, even when our daughter was born. That was only overnight.
I love spending all my spare time with him.

I honestly think marriage has different meanings to different people. I am not sure it can be easily broken up into 2 simple categories. For me, it was what I wanted. I wanted to spend the rest of my life with the man I love, and part of that was showing commitment to each other by marriage, and sharing that with our families and friends. It is not just a piece of paper to me, but I can understand why it is to others. It is a very personal thing in my opinion.
