To take, or not to take Antidepressants...?

I am suffering from terrible sleep depravation (I'm on a wait list for further insight into my sleep disorder) but a lot of it comes from being trained to expect to be woken each night with a 2.5 yr old plus a snoring husband. Because of this I am super irritable and crabby all the time. I know I could be making a much more positive environment for my family, as it is really negatively effecting all my relationships and I need to make a change. I've been on some sleep meds, which helps some of the time, but my mood still isn't great. I am to the point of thinking I need to start taking some antidepressants...Such as Nartriptyline or Trazadone. Has anyone been on either? What was your experience/change in mood and side effects? I'm a little freaked out about taking anything on a long term basis, but after about 6 months of thinking about it, I think it's time. Thanks

Was wondering what your eating and exercise habits are. How often do you get away and get outside? I had some of the same problems and figured out that people are too quick to fix things with meds sometimes. Try getting active, walking and eating better. Walking esp helps with sleep, yoga does also. Also, if your husband snores a lot he may have sleep apeniea. My now ex husband went and does have it and got help and no snoring which makes for a better rest.

Nortriptyline caused me to have a serious breakdown. Prozac made me nauseous and tired, but my friend has been on it for years with great results. It really depends on the person and the particular drug. I, personally, can not take ANYTHING no matter what it is. Other people find the right med on their first try. Other people have to try a few different things before they find the right fit.

If you do try anti-depressants... PLEASE research all of the potential side effects and call your doctor asap if you even start to exhibit any of them.

Hi Tracy,

I practice yoga most days and walk whenever it's not raining for about an hour. I eat well, most everything from scratch and mostly organic. Not much bread.

Yes, my husband has slight sleep apnea, (just got the test results) but for now, when the snoring is bad, we sleep in separate rooms, which sucks, but makes sense.

What sort of help did your ex get? I've researched the mouth guard which does not work for everyone and is very expensive. He doesn't need the sleep mask/oxygen as the apnea is not dangerous for him...

But my real issue here is MY sleep problem. I need that little magic blue pill to get any rest. Can't nap, can't turn off my brain...all of this makes me a monster. I probably had 4 hours sleep last night and maybe 5 the night before. My daughter seems to be fazing out naps, I am so not ready for that!
