What is the right age for a child to move to a toddle bed?

My guy was 2.5 yrs when we moved him to a regular bed. He never once tried to climb out of his crib but he was beginning to look like a big fish in a small pond. We didn't bother with a toddler bed and put him right into a single bed. He made the move without any trouble.

i usually waited until three. it seems like before then they are still into getting up in the middle of the night and wandering or fighting bed time. at three they understand better and are more excited about being a big girl/boy then at 2. i wouldn't use one for a child younger than 2 1/2 unless you need the crib for a baby. if you go younger than three, be prepared for night wanderings!! i used a gate at my son's door and i used a child proof lock on the inside of my daughter's door so she would not get up a million times in the night and wake up her siblings or make a mess some where... she was so quiet!! once she unlocked the door and tried to go outside!! at three it seems like they don't do that stuff as much and it is easier to get them to stay in bed.

also, unless your crib turns into a toddler bed, i wouldn't waste the money... i would go straight to a twin bed and buy a guard rail.

My children were not moved out of their cribs until they were 2 1/2-3 yrs old. It is their security and if they are not climbing out their is NO need to move them.

Also never used toddler beds they are a racket. They all went from cribs to twin beds.

I am taking the bars of my cot/bed for my daughter this weekend. She is not climbing out but when she sleeps her legs get tangled in the bars because she wriggles so much. I think she will sleep better without them and just a bed guard.

I waited till my daughter was attempting to climb out of the crib. I would also suggest a regular twin bed with rails it seemed to work better and i didnt waste the money on a toddler bed then have to buy a twin also

I heard the same thing Amanda did, but my boys never showed any signs. We just wanted to get them use to a bed so we switched them. They took to the idea right away with no problems. My first child was 20 months at the time and my second was 18 months.
