Toddler Haircut...Help?

[deleted account] ( 4 moms have responded )

Has anyone learned any tips or tricks that will hold a child's attention while he gets his hair cut? I see other kids hold still...eyes wide...while they get their hair cut. My son on the other hand...screamed...tried to climb me...Daddy stepped in...he climbed Daddy and settled in hugging his head while the hairdresser ran in circles around the two of them. She BUTCHERED his hair...and I can't blame her. If I had tried to cut his hair at that moment he would look like one of Lady Gaga's wigs right now!
I was waving a sucker at him...we tried toys...reese's pieces...and a cup of mini chips ahoy cookies. Nothing worked.

Thank You Sherri! That is GENIUS! I have the PERFECT window for that! It is a floor to ceiling window...I have a fear he is going to bump into it just right and the glass will give. I can move the antique boxes from under that window and I am SURE he will stand still there! OMG! LIFESAVER!!!!!!!!
Thank you SO MUCH!!!!!

Ink how I cut my little guys hair when he was really young I let him stand on the couch and watch out the window. He wasn't allowed to do it any other time and so he thought it was great I would get him to stand still for about 10-15mins and he let me cut his hair without moving because he was fascinated watching the cars, trucks etc. So just find something that works that will keep him occupied and still and you should be able to do a nice cut. Good luck hope this helps.

My son got his hair cut the day before he was a year old and he did amazing, he was watching the hair dresser in the mirror cut the baby in the mirrors hair. the second time was a week ago and he was horrible. he cried and wouldnt sit still. i gave him my ipod because he loves to play with it, he was fine with his hair being cut but when she was spraying water on his head to get his hair wet was when he freaked out.

bring something that he likes to play with, or something for him to drink.

You were GREAT help! I have been scared to try cutting it myself...but I do keep his Dad's hair cut..so I do know HOW...I just hadn't tried to cut the baby's hair myself. I honestly was hoping the hairdresser was going to pull a rabbit out of her hat and TEACH me how to keep him still while his hair is being cut. She had no tricks.
Hearing you say that he could just not be ready does help...It gives me hope that one day he WILL calm down during a haircut! Let's just hope that day comes before he's 40!

Seems that maybe he is not ready. I would simply do it at home and just keep it trimmed over ears and back of neck. Buy some clippers if you have too for the time being. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
