Toddler Tantrums & Preschool

My 4 year old has started throwing the absolute worst tantrums ever. As in hitting, kicking, screaming, can't be reasoned with at all kind of tantrum. And I know why - his baby sister arrived 6 weeks ago. He's amazing with her, but for the past 2 weeks his tantrums (and whining) have gotten out of control. When he's his usual self, he's an absolute sweetheart. When he's having a tantrum, he's horrifying. I've done a lot of reading and this sounds normal. And we've been implementing the various advice we've read and it's helping.

My real question is this: how do you "force" an issue that's non negotiable like preschool. Force might be a strong word but seriously, how can I get him in the car when he's a tazmanian devil, let alone out and into the classroom? Worse, he's a smart kid and now knows that if he just throws a tantrum, he doesn't have to do what we are asking. But unless I want to harm my kid, there's no way for me to get him to do what I want.

Preschool isn't necessary for us (i.e. We have childcare help, so it's not as if we are missing work when he doesn't go) but we'd like him to go as its done a lot of good for him.

Any advice, insights or thoughts would be great.
