how old is the child?
What have you tried so far for the toothache?
What did the dentist say the problem was with the tooth?

Clove oil is the best thing for short term relief of tooth and gum pain. It will last 1-4 hours depending. Long term is ibuprofen, on a regular schedule, although make sure he eats something when he takes it to prevent stomach damage.

Try switching to sensitive tooth paste. I use arm and hammer sensitive tooth paste. I can't say if it's the best for his use or not. I have bone loss which causes my dentine to be exposed and thus can cause me pain if not dealt with properly.

I would assume any other problems he might have with his teeth (for example needing a root canal) would be something the dentist would provide relief for.
