We have usually brought carseats with us, although we've also used borrowed seats from friends we were visiting. Some people also choose to buy inexpensive seats specifically for travel (either that they buy before they to leave travel with, or that they buy when they arrive if they're coming by plane or train).

I have two issues with rented carseats:

1. When rental agencies charge per day the cost of a rented seat can be excessive if you aren't renting the car for just a day or two.

2. There are a lot of horror stories about dirty, broken, expired, and inappropriate carseats. No one at the rental agency knows how to install the seat, the carseat documentation is missing, they don't have the right type of seat for the age or size of the child, the seats they have don't install properly in the cars they have, etc.

For food, I always started out with a good stash of healthy snacks... enough to make toddler meals if need be. Not because our kids needed special food, but because toddlers and preschoolers need to eat often and I didn't want to waste time looking for food when it wasn't convenient. And I didn't want to have to give the kids junk in a pinch.

Our kids were always fine with napping on planes and in cars as babies and toddlers. We also co-slept so we didn't need anything special for babies or toddlers to sleep in when we travelled. They just slept with us. Oh... although once I went to IKEA in Spain and bought the cheapest crib mattress they sell and put that on the floor for our then 2 year old to sleep on. It was six euros and it worked out perfectly.

I usually hire a carseat with the car. As far as baby's food, we just bought food along the way like we did for ourselves. At 18 months they are no longer on formula and you aren't going to a third world country so you don't need to bring everything with you.
