Hi, I am just about to go to Thailand (9 hour flight) with my 20 month old boy. He cannot sit still for 10mins, let alone 9 hours! Does anyone have any suggestions what to do? The flight is all day so he will only be used to having 1, 2hr sleep......it's a long way to thailand. Are there any natural drugs? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

Victoria

I'm from the states but live in the UK and just got back from visiting my family over the holidays with my 16 month old daughter. It was a 10 hour flight. We brought a whole back pack full of brand new books, colouring books, etc plus a portable DVD player and my husband loaded up his PSP with about an hours worth of episodes of Peppa Pig (her favourite cartoon). We also loaded her diaper bag with PLENTY of snacks! Feel free to let him walk up and down the aisles as well, my daughter was a bit uneasy with it at first but she soon got the hang of it and it helped to give her something to do other than sit there all the time. But, with all that preparation, it was not a pleasant experience flying with her! Our seats were in the front row of economy (that's where they put the babies if you've asked for a cot seat) right next to the toilets, so the minute we'd get her off to sleep the people standing there waiting to use the bathroom would wake her up! Or we had a few people making faces at her while we were trying to get her to sleep, which was very annoying. On the flight out she slept a total of 1 hour and on the way home (a night flight!) she slept a total of 20 minutes!! I think the main problem was she just couldn't get comfortable (there was another child about 2 years old on one of the flights with us and he didn't sleep a wink either :( So honestly, I wouldn't count on him sleeping unless he can sleep anywhere!

We did give her calpol just before the flights, and gave her some milk to drink as we were taking off to help with the pressure, but personally I wouldn't give her anything other than that drugs wise...

Good luck with your holiday! Both my husband and I have promised we're not gonna take her on any long haul flights again for a long time, so I hope you have better luck with your little one than we did!!
