Hello-

Anyone out there on TriCare insurance that has purchased a electric breast pump since they've recently started covering them? Which one did you buy that they successfully reimbursed you for?

You need to call your insurance agency. Often times they will only cover the cost if bought through a certain place and certain pumps. Some will require your doc. to write a prescription. Medela used to be one of the main ones they would cover if bought through a medical supply place, but recently Medela ' s are not being covered due to not being a closed system. Hospitals have also stopped using Medela as much. Ameda tends to be the one used and covered now. But often times insurances will only cover a certain model, so you really need to call them.

Renee, before you ordered a pump I would have advised to try one at your local hospital. Have you been successfully breastfeeding? Have you ever pumped before? What do you need the pump for? Work, non suckling infant, so many factors to consider before making a choice.

Thank you. I did call yesterday and they said there were no restrictions on the brand. I went ahead and ordered a medela pump.

Medela is the top manufacturer of high end electric pumps. You may be better calling the insurance to see what they cover. Also, if the insurance will cover it, you may wan to rent one rather than buy one. You'll only need it for a year or two, and if you have another baby you can then rent a newer model.
