Try Lax a day and ask the phamacist how much is safe to give. My little girl was on this for a year because she was holding it when she was 3, they had done an exray and her bowel was full. under instruction from a pediatrision she put her on lax a day the pediaitrision would have us come in every 10 weeks and she would adjust the dosage she had diareah some at first but she adjusted to it now she doesn't need anything she goes on her own she is 7. You can buy lax a day over the counter in Canada. it is very frustrating I know what you are going through.

My daughter is 6 years old and still does this. It's a control issue and a means of coping with stress. Find a therapist to help you guys through this. It's been the only thing to help us.

Thanks! My grandma suggests the same. No enema, but olive oil does seem to help him when he digests it. So glad I've found my child"s unique remedy to solving this problem! I simply had to stay consistent with diet and softeners until he built that comfort in knowing he can poop without any pain!

Also through research I have learned this is not unusual! It actually occurs with boys three times more than girls. To any mom who is at her wits end please know there is hope. Take a deep breath and live by this for a while: Consistency, strict diet, and wah lah! Trust me I know!

no mental or emotional problems. He is simply scared it will hurt as it has many other times. I actually got him to move his bowels yesterday with no crying at all! I knew if I remained consistent and strict on his diet and stool softeners i would see results! Now that he has moved them with no pain he is less afraid. A few more with no pain and this will be a thing of the past! SIGHS OF RELIEF!!!:)

Does he have some sort of a mental disorder that is causing him to do this? I'm not saying this in a judgmental tone, just curious because it isn't normal behaviour for a 3 year old. Maybe there's too much focus on his bowel movements? It seems like he's had a lot of intervention. If there isn't a medical reason, have his mental state investigated.

My Mom told me a story about this today. Feed him olive oil, that will make him go. Another option is to put some olive oil in a straw and use it like an enema.
