I had a tubal ligation done about four months ago. My life has turned to complete disarray.. I never knew a tubal ligation could have such severe mental, emotional, and physical effects. I asked my doctor to to a tubal ligation on me because I knew I was done having kids (I am 41, I have a 17 year old daughter and I am done). When I asked to have the ligation done, my doctor had me sign and didn't tell me ANYTHING ABOUT SIDE EFFECTS. My side effects are horrid.... I have an extremely heavy period like never before where I am soaking feminine products (sorry for the tmi) and I have SEVERE ANEMIA so I cannot be bleeding like this every month. My periods are also severely irregular now and I was a very regular woman. Severe constipation that cause me pain. I feel like ever since I had this surgery I have had the flu, which I don't. Sweats and cold flashes off and on. I have this conistant pain- the pain varies from being a dull, sharp pain, to being so sharp I feel like I need to lay on the floor and scream. Then it varies to feeling like a stabbing, shocking, electric shock feeling... It's in my back, my abdomen, my pelvis and shoots down my legs. I have read so many testimonials POST SURGERY of other woman and their struggles and if I had known about this affects I would've NEVER had the ligation. I feel like my moods are very unstable and I can't control myself. My doctor didn't tell me anything, especially when I have a health condition that is also very serious in relation to this.. I am asking for you women to share experiences of this process and/or if you know a woman who has gone through what I've gone through. Anything helps, and I mean anything!! I have read all over and I am 100% sure I have Post Tubal Litigation Syndrome. I now need to find some doctor who will do a reversal for me because I can't live the rest of my life like this. I'm miserable and it has ruined my quality of life. MY LIFE. It is going to be such a struggle to recover.. If you come across this and are thinking of a tubal ligation PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS TO YOURSELF, it is NOT WORTH THE WAY YOUR LIFE WILL BE AFFECTED!!! Do not do this for a form of birth control (you can still get pregnant, too!!!) please use the pill, or the shot, or work out another option for yourself. Do not put yourself through the pain, the emotional distress, the anxiety, the financial requirements it takes, everything!!!! I am trying to contact a lawyer for this too because I am in danger with my severe anemia and my periods now. Please read about PTLS, it is real! Any help is appreciated. I hope this helps some people, I can attest to everything everyone has read or written. And just to clarify.... I never had these issues until right after I tied my tubes.. I have had past surgeries for cysts and endo and never felt this way- this is because I tied my tubes and I know a doctor will confirm this for me. Yes, women do get their tubes tied and never have any complications, but it is said that women can gets these severe complications afterwards, and I don't think it's worth the risk if you are healthy! Iit is not worth tying your tubes hoping you'll be the "safe" one.. It is too dangerous and I can attest to that 100%

I have a lot of these symptoms myself, started a few years ago. The HEAVY heavy bleeding, irregular periods, OMG, the mood swings! A lot of these symptoms are very similar to pre-menopause. It is not unusual for a tubal to trigger the process. I had my tubal years ago, and have nothing but good things to say about no longer having to worry about birth control. I am sorry you had such a horrible experience with this.

Go get your tubal reversed then. You will have to pay out of pocket, but if that is what you feel with fix your issues emotionally and physically, have at it.

Good luck with suing your doctor *rolls eyes*. That consent form you sign? You should have read it. If you read it, you would have had all the information you needed.

I had a procedure done also on top of the tubal. I hate how my body responded to it. My doctor never told me this would happen. Not suing. Not pursuing. There was nothing that resulted that would encourage me too.

What will happen if you have the reversal and have a whole new set of problems?

Just remember, if you get the reversal, you can get pregnant. Just saying so if you do get pregnant, you don't turn around and sue the doctor.

Nadine- thanks for confirming you felt some of what I have too. I've been trying to convince myself I am not crazy. I am single, 41, but I thoroughly chose to tie my tubes for the form of birth control in the future if so. I had no idea I could have majorly debilitating side effects. I know it's lovely to not have to worry about birth control.

I have read hundreds of testimonials of women who got a tubal reversal. And they all said immediately after they felt "back to normal" and within a year after TR everything was okay. Aside the pain being scary (which I'd rate it at a 15 all the time.. It feels like I need morphine) I would so let reverse this because I can't be bleeding like this for he next few years. I also am entirely opposed to a hysterectomy, so I'd have to rev serve this if I can't bleed like this. Which I can't, it's a serious health concern and my oncologist confirmed I it as well.

I'm glad tubal ligation worked for you, I know there are plenty of f women who do okay and it worked :) but there are tons of people suffering like me out there, thank you for your response :)

Yes I know, typing error. My apologies. I already had a consult with another OBGYN (I will not go back to my old one) who confirmed my struggles have come from my tubes being tied, which I should've been warned about because I've been severely anemic all my life.
Like I said, I am working with a lawyer for what's happened with this doctor. She was my doctor for almost 15 years. There's a lot I didn't write on here that she's done to me, this was just the latest. Yes, I know I cosented, but I consented to something where she told me none of the side effects. You have to tell someone the side effects if the consent starting if there is a 1% chance of any known complications. Here we are saying its 12% and I was told nothing :( Thanks for your response, it helped to hear from you! Just want to be back to normal, I'm too young to even be going into menopause.

First it is ligation, not litigation. Second PTLS is believed to be related to damage of the blood supply to the ovaries during the surgery, not the actual tying or cutting of the tubes. Third no where near 37% of women suffer from this condition, sure I found testimony claiming this but the AMA estimates it at 12%. Finally, there are treatment modalities. If you are suffering, consult a different doctor and consider reporting your surgeon to the DPR in your state.
