Unless you have a c-section you will generally have to wait 6-12 months after giving birth before a doctor will tie your tubes. I had mine done about a year after my youngest was born. I had a bit of discomfort but nothing major - tylenol took care of it. I had fallen on the ice near my house just before going into the hospital and my hip where I fell hurt more than my abdomen from the surgery.
That said, if you have strong period symptoms now (cramping, bloating, etc) they may get worse after you have your tubes tied. Mine did, but not to a point where I can't deal with it.

I am not sure if the doctors will tie your tubes right after giving birth, I had to wait until a few months later. I went into the hospital in the morning and was home by 2 or 3 in the afternoon. It was not bad at all, I was a little tender in my lower stomach. I have a tiny tiny little scar in the top of my pubes. All I took for the discomfort (not pain, discomfort) was tylenol. If you don't want to have any more kids go for it!
