Ok having an 8 year old I was wondering about this. A TV is not in his room but he has access to one. Do you allow TV watching and if so how much? Is more allowed on weekends VS weekdays? I allow a little more in the winter and on weekends compared to weekdays and in the summer (unless it's raining). Also depends on behavior at home, behavior at school, grades, etc.

Also what age do you start allowing more movie choices, meaning PG-13, R, do you wait to 13 for PG13? I wasn't allowed to see R until probably late middle school, I think PG-13 was about 12 or so. This question stems from something he asked about after seeing on TV that I will ask about later. But just wondering.

Thank you Carrie. I figured that keeping them busy with school and after school activities would act as something like a regular monitor.

the thing I don't like about TV is how much sex there is no a days. I for one dislike the shows on Disney. Before I was a parent and when we would watch nephews and nieces I would turn it on, before I learned they were not allowed to watch it. Most of the shows seemed to make the parents look stupid and the kids ruling the house.

As someone said in my post last night to, you can't plan out everything, but my whole point of joining here is just to learn as much as I can from others and hopefully share as well.

I'm not a parent that monitors the amount of time my kids watch tv. I have an 11 and 8 year old I figure after school, homework, dinner, basketball or baseball practice and baths they have a built in monitor. I do find they watch a little more on the weekends but I also find that eventually they get sick of it and turn it off on their own. As far as rating choices go, I don't really go by that. I watch the movie first and If I feel it is ok then I let them watch it with me. Obviously I don't let them watch anything with a lot violence or any sex at this age, however my 11 year old does like the first Transformers movie and that is rated PG-13.
