Tween Son Can't Focus

He's bright, capable of doing his school work but when it doesn't interest him...he spaces out! We were trying to help him with a science poster and asked him a few questions about what they talked about in school and his answer was "I don't know. I don't remember." And he doesn't write good notes in his planner no matter how I try to help him with organizing.

To compound the problem, text books stay in school, maybe he can borrow them but he may have to ask and check them out...and since he's not a risk taker, he will never ask. His teachers don't send updates. According to the principal, teachers can't update every parent and we are supposed to look at their website for updates...which the teachers don't do reliably or regularly like they are supposed to do.

Even when we talk out a problem and what to write, sometimes he just stares at us! Is it a phase?
Please tell me it is!!!

It is just a phase.....and may last for a couple of years. Basically, the huge surge of testosterone they receive in these pre-teen/teen years renders them practically brainless. As their mothers, we tend to have to also become their brain during that time. Both our boys were at their absolute vaguest around this age. But I assure you, they do come out the other side :)

(for reference, the effects of testosterone on young boys is a fact - have a read of a book called "Raising Boys" by Steve Biddulph to help you get a bit more understanding - it has really helped me over the years).
