Underachieving son

my 16 year old son (almost) 17 year old who has a twin sister (who is over achieving) failed almost all his classes last marking period. he somehow passed for the year and is no going into his junior year. my husband and i have been very involved in his education from kindergarten up. he was diagnosed with ADD when he was in 2nd grade and we have been struggling with medication since then. he finally said he didnt want to take medication because it makes him feel sick. in the past i have worked closely with the teachers and guidance counselors and it still doessnt help. part of the problem is that he is a very nice kid and everyone likes him and he is great at manipulating me and frankly his teachers. while i hate to see him fail (it breaks my heart and i know that is my issue) i almost feel like i need to pull back and let him deal with the consequences. i think i have inadvertantly contributed to his underachieving and i think i need to pull back and let him deal with the consequences. i dont know what is right. i hope someone can help
