UNprotected sex with Mirena IUD?

I was just wondering, if you do have/had the MIRENA IUD, do/did you use any other protection other than the IUD itself? I've only had the Mirena IUD in for a few days. I was just curious b/c I was told by other girls that they do not use any other protection other than the IUD, and that it's very hard to get pregnant off of it. I know nothing's 100% except abstinence.

I've also got a question, when I got the Mirena IUD inserted, the length of the strings were fine, until a few days ago...they're almost poking out of me!!! Does this mean that the IUD slipped out of place? Would I feel it slip out of place if it did?

I've had mine in for 18 months and we don't use anything. And I'm one of those women who can get pregnant if not on any bc and a man sneezes near me.:) I haven't even had one of those scares where I wondered. Word of warning, though: you may bleed on and off for a few months, especially during.

I used it just by itself ! I ended up getting it off and then I got pregnant again ; so be careful if you remove it

Hi.. Well if you are only concerned about preg then I think it's safe. Obviously if you have multiple partners you wanna be safe- as for preg I had no problem and I wore mine for 4 yrs .. When we decided to have another and have it removed I got preg easily also. If you just got it placed I would check with the dr to see if you need to wear a condom for a while but overall I found it effective

if your strings are falling out of place call your dr now!!! that happened to my first iud(copper-t) they have to fix that immediately if the strings are outside of where they are suppose to "stay."
Thanks for the quest thread though b/c i just got my first mirena after my 3rd sons birth. I loved my copper-ts effectiveness and went with the mirena this time around and was wondering the same thing

No other protection required. My doc said no play until after first checkup. We were limited on position for a couple of months after that due to the strings scratching him. This I feel may pose a problem with a condom,

As long as it is in good placement then it should work right. I have had the Mirena for 2 years now and thankfully it is working just fine. I got pregnant with my 2 kids on the first shot, so my OB/GYN recommended it when I no longer wanted kids and didn;t want to go permanent. My husband and I never use any other protection.

it's more reliable than any pill or condom. And yes, it works immediately when placed and you can get pregnant as soon as it's removed.

I have had mine in for 4 1/2 years. We don't use any other bc either. I love it.

Also check with your dr about how long it needs to be in place before it is "safe". It seems like my dr told me to wait a bit. But I can't remember.

I am currently on my second Mirena and have never used any other form of bc with it, like another poster commented it's like double protection, a two for one! I can't say enough wonderful things about Mirena...in my opinion, it's a fantastic choice...no remembering to take a pill, and the possibility of no AF...wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! Added note, fertitilty returns very quickly after removal. I hope you have as good an experince as I have had.

Have had mine almost four years, never use anything else! It releases a small dose of hormones, like the pill, in addition to keeping eggs from implanting...so it is kind of like double protection already!

Haha! Honey, I can tell you this sucker WORKS!!! I have 7 kids. yup, 7. :) I wanted a big family, but they came a little faster than I expected. Nothing I tried worked, nothing. I got the mirena when my youngest was nearly 2. He is almost 5 and he is, as I said, the youngest. So enjoy your life. This is about as close to a sure thing as it gets. :)

I have had mine for almost a year now and we do not use any other protection. I haven't gotten pregnant*knock on wood*. The IUD is more effective than any other birth control but like you said abstinence is the only guaranteed way to prevent pregnancy 100%. I do not feel as if I will get pregnant with mine in place but my hunny and I both know there's always that chance and we would both be accepting of another pregnancy should it happen. If you can't say that for yourself then I would recommend some form of backup. The thing I have been wondering about is how safe is condom use with a mirena...since the "strings" protrude and are kind of like fishing line. That could poke holes in a condom and such.
