ok the first time i ever heard of these was on this site, and i admit i was shocked, i admit most seem to be about confirming early pregnancy, but both of my pregnancies were dated around 5 wks and were abdo scans, the heartbeat of no 2 was even visible (but too early to measure) so im not sure why so many are given the vaginal one at around that stage (excepting other medical issues of course), is it standard in other countries? im in Australia
it just seems unnecessary, and i dare say damn uncomfortable
anyway just curious on thoughts :)

I never had an vaginal ultrasound until a miscarrage, and then had 4 more to determine a health issue. I am in Canada

For my last pregnancy and this one I had the vaginal ultrasound both for confirming my pregnancies and seeing how far along I was. I think at my doctor's office it is standard I'm not sure why though. As they are uncomfortable its not the worst thing.

For both of my pregnancies, the 7 week check was done with a vaginal ultrasound. They did not even bother with an abdominal one. Never even offered it.

If it is solely for the purpose of confirming an early intrauterine pregnancy, they will generally attempt the external scan first. However, in some women, the position of their uterus makes visualization impossible, thus prompting the need for a vaginal probe. And, as Nikki pointed out, they are used (and needed) for GYN issues such as ovarian cysts.

Anyone who has undergone any fertility treatments like IUI or IVF is exceptionally familiar with them. They really aren't that big of a deal, and are certainly less "uncomfortable" than say, that yearly pap smear with a speculum.

Another Aussie, I have had a few, 2 during pregnancy, once to confirm at 6 weeks and once later on. Then I had a couple because of some problem cysts. Honestly they were less uncomfortable than a regular scan, I hate scans, all the pushing really hurts with a full bladder where as you hardly feel an internal scan and it's a much better result, quicker too and you don't need a full bladder. If I could chose between the two I would choose internal over a normal abdominal scan any day.

I never had one while I was pregnant (I'm in Canada), but I did get one when they were trying to diagnose appendicitis..NOT pleasant. I haven't known any of my friends to get a vag ultrasound to confirm pregnancy.
