I had given birth almost a month ago and had just found out that the doctor had left somthing in me, i am going to the docs tomorrow but i think it might be gause, So make sure to ask your doc to make sure there is nothing left in you. If you do have somthing left in you, you'll have a horrible smell down there.

Ladies I don't want to be the bearer of 'bad news' or scare any Mommy's-to-be out there, but three weeks ago I gave birth to a beautiful 8 LB 10 OZ 21.4 inch baby girl, and just days later I was experiencing chills-being very cold for two nights in a row, having a foul odor with the discharge, and having pains down there. I thought some of this may just be hormonal-but I also was aware that foul odor is a potential sign of infection as is having chills. It was a Friday after hours when I called to speak with the on call doctor whom called me and assured me if I had no fever he doubted I had any infection but to come in Monday if I still was having chills and issues. Well the chills subsided and I doubted myself-assuming maybe the odor was normal and I was just over-thinking things. Well I continued having vaginal pains sometimes but thought this is normal after delivering a big baby vaginally. However, I noticed there seemed to be something beneath the stitches in my vagina-like a lump or something. I thought maybe I was just healing and this would go away. But over time, the lump began to slowly protrude. Finally this morning I got the guts to look at it and have my husband look at it- and I was so freaked out at the sight---I even considered the idea that something had prolapsed. But at a better look, my husband realized it was GAUZE. Not just gauze, but upon pulling the gauze out it turned out to be 9 inches long and yes it was very jammed in me. It must have been done when he delivered the placenta and was stitching me up. So while it may seem "RARE"- it does happen...and the hospital I delivered at is said to be a GOOD hospital with wonderful doctors.......so it is still good for women to be AWARE that this can happen so if something like this happens to them and they decide to google away like I do then they might find a post like this and be a little relieved to know what on earth might be going on down there. It was pretty terrifying for me, and gauze being lodged inside like that is a major risk for infection- so the doctor on call this time told me to keep an eye on things and call Monday if any pain or discharge or anything abnormal.

Jasmine sorry to hear about this happening to you take care of yourself and get better....

Yes this can happen but so can a plane crashing into your house it can happen but it don't happen THAT often. So you 1st time moms I wouldn't worry too much over it....I've had 3 children and on top of eveyone else I know that had a baby and eveyone they know I haven't heard of it happening... It is rare and if you are having problems after the birth of your baby yes go get checked out and make sure there is nothing wrong.. More then likely you aren't even going to be thinking about asking your dr if they remembered to take everything right after your baby is born and for a normal birth usually they don't put anything inside you as long as things are going pretty normal.. Just relax things will be ok but if you have compication after birth even if you think they are silly call your dr... Good Luck all you expecting momma's

This is actually more common than you might think. It's not from surgery but after you birth the placenta a lot of doctors will jam gauze up there to stop the bleeding. Usually the gauze will fall out on it's own. If you notice any irritation or a foul smell you should see your doctor immediately.

Well, I suppose its a good idea to keep in mind that its POSSIBLE for your doctor to leave something behind, but its really LOW LOW LOW down on the list.

Its a bit more likely than the doctor taking a kidney without your permission.

Honestly? I'm trying to think of when the best moment would have been after my 3 normal births for me to ask my doctor if maybe they left something in me?

Its protocol for surgeries to count and recount the items on the trays - including pieces of gauze before the surgery and again after.

I had a little gauze left in me after #1 but it cam out on it's own a few days later. I was torn so badly inside that they said they thought that it was muscle because it was so saturated with blood. It wasn't a big deal......

I am not trying to scare people, im just telling them to be more carefull, i wish someone would of told me and i would of made my doc check twice. I think people still need to be aware of what can happen. There is nothing to be scard of like people said it does not happen often that i heard, just be carfull thats all!

i agree with bec, while its important to raise the issue you don't want to be putting the frighteners on women about to give birth, i had 2 kids with no issues whatsoever

This is a very rare problem. Most hospitals take the most care. This is not really nice for some mums too read that are about to give birth. I have had 2 children and had no problems.
