We didn't wait until marriage but...

My husband and I met in high-school and we were together for 2 years before we had intercourse and as I look back now my husband and I were lucky that we loved each other and really understood that. We were lucky we didn't get pregnant, break up or any of the craziness that could have happened to us, but now we are wanting to start a family and I have been thinking how do I teach my kids that they should wait when my husband and I didn't? We currently do not have any kids and I know it will be a long time before I have to have that conversation but it has been on my mind...what are y'all's thoughts??

Just because you did something does not mean you can't teach them not to do it. In some ways that is what parenting is all about. Trying to teach your kids right and wrong and how not to make the mistakes you made. Will they make mistakes....yes, but hopefully will also learn and avoid some of the mistakes you made. Another thing about parenting is that you are their parent not their friend. So not all things need to be shared. You may or may not decide to share your experiences with your child. And some children you may share certain things where others you may not. Again it is a learning tool....if it is beneficial for their learning for you to share then share if not then don't share. There are many mistakes and things both my husband and I have done throughout our lives....some things our kids know and some they do not. Some of the mistakes we made make us wiser in raising our kids (like saying you are going to a friends house and instead you go somewhere else)....or you saying you are going to go see a certain movie, but instead see one you know your parents would not allow. Something that most kids will do at some point and having been there done that you know when things sound fishy or to ask lots of questions about the details when they get home.
