Im weaning my 5 month old off breast feeding I was tld to drop the feed between morning and lunch time first then the afternoon one. If she doesnt take the bottle then she suffers til lunch. Im managing this but I dont know how my milk is supposed to dry up when she is just refusing or taking tiny bit of the bottle and then drinking twice as much at the next beast feed how do I determine how long to wait for the lunch feed so shedoesnt think I am giving in and letting her have a breast feed? I will be taking the arvo feed out and changing to bottle also tomorrow so it seems like she will just be drinking twice the amount at breastf eeding time to make up for the bottle she is refusing.

Also she normally breastf eeds to sleep so she is taking an hour or more to cry herself to sleep I let her cry on my shoulder now. Because she normally has a mid morning breast feed then big sleep til lunch time. now she misses that morning feed because of refusing the bottle. Any advice. Must be fully weaned by 4 weeks time...

Have you tried adding breastmilk to the bottle? Don't use formula straight away, just to get baby used to having the bottle. Wait a few days and when she is taking a reasonable feed, put a small amount of formula with the breastmilk. Not enough to really alter the taste, about an ounce, when that small amount is going well increase the formula by a bit more. Do this untlll the feed is mostly formula, remember, she may not like the formula you are using and you may need to change it. You could also ditch the bottles and go for baby cups instead, watch out for the non drip ones, they can sometimes require alot of effort to suck and put baby off. you just do all of the above in a cup instead of a bottle. If you are struggling you could phone the national breastfeeding helpline 0870 444 8708
Hope this helps you......Louise x

thanks she is ok with the taste now but seems to think of it not as a replacement feed just as something extra. She had a little more today about 90 mills. We'll work on it. Im also struggling because I dont want to stop breast feeding so its very hard emotionally. I taking it very slow now only dropping the one feed for the next week. I have rang ABA (australian breast feeding line). they were great

Im trying to use formula. The first day she took 70 mills then I gave in and breast fed yesterday it was maybe 40 mills if that and shes taking about an hour to drink it and today so far nothing just went to sleep so will have tos ee when she wakes. These are the bottle I have most success with. She struggles to drink somuch fluid because she has to have at least 2 bottle of prune juice per day as well for constipation. I got told about adding prune juice to the formula to make it taste different. Maybe should try adding something.

It took my son a very long time to wean to a bottle but I think it was partly to me not pushing it.... are you pumping or trying to use formula? I found that the type of bottle I used made a big difference... Nuk brand with a orthopedic nipple(funny shaped) and I added a very small amount of a yogurt drink to the formula. Gerber makes one that has a couple of flavors... over a month time I slowly stopped adding it and he would drink the formula alone. Good Luck..
