Weight Loss?

My 3 week old has lost nearly a pound! The doctor told me to supplement breast milk with formula. She would rather sleep than eat and getting her to wake up and stay awake to eat is nearly impossible. What should I do?

You've probably already tried this, but doing some activities with baby to wake up more and nurse better might help like doing a diaper/clothing change routine or giving a bath before nursing. Also by all means, wake that baby back up when it falls asleep at the breast. I was always having to tap a new born's nose or rub a cheek to get remind them where they were and get their mouth to start sucking again. Maybe before the formula try putting your breast milk in a bottle. Sometimes when the babies are just sleepy they get nursing lazy and a bottle can be a faster way of getting nourishment. If you do have to use formula for a bit, I wouldn't worry too much. I know lots of moms that have had to supplement for a bit with a really little baby and were still able to go back to exclusive nursing once weight had normalized. Congratulations. I hope you and your baby are able to enjoy nursing for a long time and that your baby's weight starts to pick up a bit. BTW just under pound drop is not really a huge danger zone yet but definitely Dr's like to see weight move up not down. Don't beat yourself up most little babies go through spurts where they are in a phase of either eating lots or sleeping lots. Growing seems to take so much energy out of them.
