My son was 4. We got him a book that had a red and a blue shoe lace which made learning very easy!! We got it through scholastics... it only took him a week at the most!

My oldest daughter, who is 9 yr. old, learned to tie her shoes when she was 5 yr. old - actually one week before kindergarten. My youngest is 4 yr. old and she just started to practice last week.

I think it depends on the patience of the child, my son wants to tie his shoes and mine, but he doesn't have the patience to actually learn to do it yet, he is 3.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with an eight year old who has trouble with this. It's really my fault-I've always bought him no-tie shoes to save time for me and for his teachers!

Ha, ha, my middle child is 8 and still doesn't have it down!  It's his lack of interest combined with my lack of patience.  We both get frustrated about 2 minutes into it.  I told him this morning that we have to have him tying his shoes before the end of summer!  You can't be in 4th grade and not be able to tie your shoes!!

My son started tying his shoes when he was four. It took practice and a year or so before it was done well!

Quoting Katrina:

Ahhhh not until they are about 6 or seven. It all depends on the child.

it should be sooner than that.... many school districts make it so the child has to be able to tie their shoes before they enter kindergarden
