What age do you thing is good to pierce ears?

My daughter is 6 weeks old and I'm thinking about getting her ears pierced. At what age do you think is ok to get them done? I didn't get mine till I was older. I'm worried about her pulling on them or getting them caught. Would I need to look for a special place to have them done?

I don't have a huge opinion on this...but I've got a different perspective.

One of my close guy friends works in a tattoo shop, and is a certified piercer. Not with a gun, with needles, the professional way.

He is the single dad of an 8year old girl, and he waited to do hers until she was 5ish. He said that if you get them as babies, their ears grow, and then the piercings are not even as adults. Some people, it is barely noticeable. Other people, came to him to see if he can fix it because it looks ridiculous.

So, that's just something to think about.

My daughter was 4 mos old and we got her ears done at a piercing pagoda in the mall. Never had any problems with it at all I just could watch so grandma did it, it was her idea and I had mine done around the same age.

I think if you are going to get their ears pierced in infancy, getting it done earlier is better. They get used to it quite quickly, and wont bother with trying to pull them or anything I think. Just my thought though, I dont have experience with it myself. My daughter doesnt have hers pierced, because I honestly never even thought of it. I had mine done when I was in grade 3, and it was because I asked my mom for months to get it done. I ended up having to take them out a week or two later because I had promised vehemently that I would look after them, and not touch em, and of course I took them out and poked at them and tried on all my moms earrings like 3 days after getting them done, they got all irritated and eventually infected because of my dirty schoolyard hands manhandling them daily! Do it super early, or wait until middle school. Any time in between your kids hands are filthy despite your best intentions!

When she is old enough to tell you that that's what SHE wants to do to/with HER body.

They need to have first round of immunizations first. After that I would get them done. I think the avg. age is around 12wks.

I'm with Jodi. I would wait until she's old enough to ask for it, and you can use it as a nice reward for when she's consistently responsible enough that you feel she'll be able to take good care of the piercings. Plus, I'm not a big fan of altering a child's body if there's no medical need for it.

Keep in mind as well that it's not unusual for piercings to wind up looking too high, or too low, or otherwise "off" as the child's ears grow into their adult size.

However, if you insist on getting her ears pierced while she's a baby, please do not go to one of those mall places with the gun. Sure, the lancets are sterile, but they can't sterilize the gun itself. And really...how much training can these people really have in piercing? I would recommend contacting a reputable piercing place (they're often combined with tattoo places), where they will use the proper equipment and techniques.

First are there any allergies in your family? If there are, I highly recommend holding off on piercing your daughters ears until you find out if she has allergies. Multiple allergies can cause a reaction when ears are pierced and create an allergy to metals. (This from my allergist) This would include metals in coins.

I waited until my daughter asked.

i'd wait itll 6 month ..my daughter is 7 months and just had hers done. By 6 months she is pretty well vaccinated. This was the reccomendation of my pediatrician also. Definately better to get them done as babies, they ave a better opportunity to heal without complication :) Some drs office do piercing now..but they are usually expensive ($80) , i had both my daughters done in the mall with no problems ( i would strongly reccomend only gold unless there is a family history of allergies. You can also take them to a good tattoo and piercing place , i have a friend that did that and swears by it. I wasn't so sure so I stuck with what I know. My 7 month old was fine when she had it done, fussed for a minute and then calmed right down, she really hasn't touched them at all, and i don't think really knows they are there. It bugs her when I put the antiseptic solution on them, tu moreso just cause she doesn't want me messing with her ears where she can't see what i'm doing :) Silly little one. Good luck , and best wishes for piercing success, I hope this helped :)

Personally, I wouldn't pierce a baby's ears. I think it should be their choice when they get older.

My daughter is 6 and she has asked, but I don't believe she is old enough to look after them properly herself yet, so I have told her it is something very special, so maybe for a graduation from primary school gift - she will be 11 then :) She was happy with that answer.

I got my daughters done when she was about 6 months old. she did fine with them, I had them done in the mall I can't recall the place but the little kiosk in the middle. they come in sterilized packs so I nothing to worry about with that.
