What age should a boy clean under his foreskin?

My son is almost 9 now and am confused as to when I should teach him to clean under his foreskin properly. I have heard warnings about not pulling it back when boys are young but also am aware that there is risk of infection when not cleaned properly. When is an appropriate tim e to teach him to do this or does it depend on his physical develoment?

I'm sorry if this comes off as rude- it's not meant as such. You should NEVER retract the foreskin of an infant. It should not be retracted until it retracts on it's own. Not only are there countless resources online about this- I have talked to several doctors and the nurses in the hospital when I had my son who confirmed for me that you SHOULD NOT be retracting the foreskin until it retracts on it's own!!!

Now the the OP, if his foreskin has already retracted on it's own then I would go ahead and teach him to clean under it (perhaps he'd be more comfortable with a man showing him though...idk) just so that he picks up some good hygiene habits. :)

I agree with September, you should of been doing it since birth, and he should of taken over once old enough to bathe himself. You would of taught him how to wash every other part of his body, why not his penis?

In my opinion I think this is something you should have been doing since he was born. Our son is 15 months old and I when I change him I'm always sure to pull back his foreskin to clean it properly. Once he is bathing himself I'll be sure to explain how important it is to keep it clean. So you could start now :)

My son will be 9 in March. I was wondering if we should start showing him how to do this too.

We have a 6 year old and the Doctor actually explained it to him!!! I would teach him right away because you want him to be cleaning properly down there!!!

we started when our boys were both about three months old, just gently inicially, u dont want it to split!! danger of infection! but it will slowly stretch the skin over time and eventually it will be very easy to do xx
