I wanted to donate mine and the placenta but I started investigating options at about 6mos pregnant & they said I should've started the process earlier due to tests and paperwork so I couldn't donate it. As far as storing it, I didn't do it because there's a greater likelihood that my child will go to college vs. falling ill to one of the diseases helped by cord blood so we took the money for cord blood storage and started a college fund for him.

I think it is a rip-off playing on your fears. If everyone donated the cord blood like regular blood, there would be a constant supply and no one would ever be in need. It is a corporate greed of the worst kind because it makes you fearful for the worst, yet no one is afraid of not having enough regular blood because it is always available. We were going to donate it, but circumstances prevented us from doing so because our daughter needed medical attention that necessitated cutting the cord quickly.
