When my daughter was 8, she found ways to amuse herself. If she complained about being bored, I told her to get three boxes, the go to her room and categoize her toys into give away, throw away, and keep. She never complained about being bored again.
They should be able to amuse themselves at this point. They should have bicycles and other age appropriate toys and games.

When I was that age, if the word "bored" passed my lips my mom would exclaim, "Oh, no, that's terrible! Let's find something to help with that! You can vacuum the whole house. That'll fix your boredom." It's certainly a way to make them stop complaining.

I wonder what your 14 year old's dreams are. Get him to plan something and get a job to save up for it. When my sister was 12 and I was 16, we concocted a plan to go backpacking in Europe. We saved money and made plans, and when she was 16 and I was 19, we went! (now that I realize how young we were I can see why my parents were worried and made us call home every day, but it all went very well and it's a fond memory)

Kaitlin,
Yes we do have a park, and my 10yr old is o'k with that, but my 14yr old don't like it unless he can be there with his friends. I like to know who he is with and what he is doing. we do have a Basketball Court that he goes to sometimes. he likes to walk around with friends.

Reach out to your town I know our town has all sorts of summer camps, we also live near a college campus that offer soccer camps, football camps. Honestly name a sport and you can probably find some sort of summer camp to enroll them in.

is there a park and rec program in your town (cheap, in town, usually has classes and sports and events and camp like things)? check out your town/city website.

Thanks Amy,
I do appreciate all what your saying. I am so glad that I signed up for Circle of Moms, it is very helpful. My 14yr old is in sports as he is in school, what kind of sports are there he can join in the summer?

I agree at 10 and 14 they are very capable of entertaining themselves, my 6 year old is capable of entertaining himself for a period of time. Open the front door and send them outside. They can play basketball, ride bikes, go to the park, play baseball, soccer the things they can do is endless. If they want to hang out with friends I don't necessarily see a problem with it as long as you know who they are and maybe have a rule that they can not go inside a friends home unless an adult is home but I would even limit that because you don't want them sitting at their friends house all day playing video games.

You can look into getting them enrolled into sports camps for the summer to keep them from just sitting around.

My kids are so LAZY,,, they don't know what that word mean... I have my 14yr old in sports, but its coming up summer, and all he wants to do is hang around with a bunch of Friends.... and I don't know if that is good or not.
There's my 10yr old, he stays on the game all the time and love to eat, and he weight 132lbs way to much for his age. It seems like I need a break, but I need to make something to make me not BORED. any Ideals. Thank you Kaitlin Finn.

Carolyn
Hope we can become friends.

make them go outside, or take them to the library.
At this age, they are more than capable of entertaining themselves- give yourself a break!
Kids these days don't want to do anything for themselves, they always want to be entertained by an outside force. If they're bored, give them chores ;)
