What can I put on my daughter's dry, cracked thumb?

My daughter (21 months) sucks her thumb and because of that it has always been chapped and callaused. Now, with the dry weather and more frequent sucking it has started cracking and splitting. I want to put something on it to help moisturize it so it can heal, but I'm not sure what. What can I use that wouldn't be dangerous (and ideally wouldn't have to be reapplied all the time) when she puts her thumb back in her mouth?

None of my children sucked their thumbs nor does my grandson, however, a friend of mine does have a child that sucks their thumb and she uses olive oil. So maybe this will help.

Lansinoh (lanolin) might be a good idea. It's safe for in the mouth, and not petroleum based like almost everything else.
