I have seen that you can use a rectal thermometer and vasoline to stimulate a movement, it'll most likely cause him to push so it might help moving it along. Even with your doctor gone, the office is full of nurses, they will talk to you and give you direction on what to do, that who I mainly talk to, the dr is always busy and Im sure that is with almost all dr's.
How long has it been since he has been? Like the other person said if its been 3 days or more, dont worry. If it has make an appointment, even in the office they can show you how to stimulate a BM, and also check to see the cause of it

This sounds crazy..i know. I promise it works. I have 3 teens and the oldest had colic for at least her first 6 months.

Take a q-tip, get it wet and rub it on a bar of soap. Then insert it like a suppository. But take it back out immediately. After about 30 min, sometimes more, they will pass the gas or have a bm. If that doesn't work repeat. My ped doctor said this is great for newborns (mine was a premie) because suppositories are large and they sometimes hurt tiny babies.

This actualy helped my son when he was a newborn and constipated:
Let your baby lie on his back take alittle bit of olive oil on your pointer and middle finger and the start massaging about 5 cm around the bellybutton in clockwise.Massage slow around and around for a few minutes dont press to hard.It helps them make bowel movements. Give it a try! Good luck

Hey does it have to be prune juice or could just eat so many of the prunes a day?

Karo syrup
The leg exercise

And if that doesn't work:-
Infant size glycerine suppositories (the 1 gram dose - you don't have to cut them in half)
The soap suppository (same size) - so long as the soap is unscented it's safe to insert and it'll definitely make the baby do a dooey in 3-10 minutes!)

I would recommend Culterelle it is a pro biotic for children and or adults. I had to use it on my daughter when going through the switching of formulas for a milk allergy and soy allergy. It works for both constipation or diarrhea. I would not recommend using anything have to stick in their rectum. Use may buy it over the counter at Walmart.

I would talk with your doc. Usually docs. don't consider it constipation unless a baby has not gone for 3 days.....even for newborns. Also for newborns pooping is a new thing for them, so signs of being uncomfortable are normal. Some may get red in the face, grunt, or cry when they poop.....all those are normal and not necessarily signs of constipation. It would be good to talk to your doc, so he can tell you if this is a concern or just normal newborn learning to poop.

If it is constipation then your doc can let you know the best form of action depending on the situation. My son had constipation due to the iron(which they need) in the formula when he was a newborn. The rectum stimulation is one suggestions docs make. Another is the DARK KARO SYRUP in their bottle.....this is what we did. If this is what your doc wants you to do he will tell you how and how much to give. This worked really good with my son, but this is also something you have to continue doing until they are off the formula. Another suggestion docs give is to switch to the Good Start formula (talk to your doc first before you do this).....The Good Start brand seems to be able to break down easier for babies causing less constipation.

Again Talk with your doc....that is why they are there. They have seen many babies and can be able to direct you in the right direction better then we can.

When mine was little, I used to gently rub his lower tummy and it never failed to produce a BM. But if yours doesnt go for a couple, three days I would be concerned and take them to the doctor, to make sure he doesnt get compacted, they can prob give you something to help em along Hope the best!

In addition to the q-tip trick, you can use vaseline on the end of it for lubrication. I asked the pharmacist about suppositories and she said that they do seem quite big for little babies but you can always break them in half. She did say to handle it as minimally as possible because the glycerine just dissolves with body heat.

It could be the formula like someone said. Also as someone adviced here you have a newborn do not give any juice unless the doctor is ok with it. When I was breastfeeding and i get the cold I would cover my nose and wash my hands. It takes extra work but you can't stop breatfeeding and then go back to it. Unless you don't want to breastfeed anymore, make every effort to go back before it is gone.

Yes those sites say you can give an older baby apple juice.....the sites state that if the baby is a NEWBORN to CALL YOUR DOC.

If your baby is a newborn then she is too little for any kind of juice.....juice will only make her tummy worse. I would suggest talking with your doc first. There are things you can do for newborn constipation, but being a newborn you also have to be careful what you give.....so your doc is the best person to talk to.

My daughter is always constipated I used to breast feed her, so what I did is that I drank a lot of prune juice and she is fine after that and now, I give her daily some prune juice to drink , so helpful and water is important too !

yea switching to formula can cause it. Some would suggest baby juice but they only sell baby juice around here in 32oz bottles, which is way more than you will need. As long as it's pasteurized juice of any brand it will be safe.

Are the stools hard? Many breastfed babies will not have bowel movements for possibly a week. This is normal and fine as long as it isn't hard for them to go, the stool isn't hard, or doesn't look like pebbles.

If they are truly constipated you can give them water or a little bit of apple juice, I would not give more than 2 oz a day to start. Make sure the juice is pasteurized, although most are, just double check. Also check it is 100% juice and not a "juice cocktail"
