I have a 15 year old daughter who has on more than one occasion threatened to run away from home. As a parent what can I do?

I would sit down and very calmly say, "Okay, let's plan this then. Where are you going to live? And what will you do for money?" Go over every logistic with her.

Then, once she's realized that she's painted herself into a corner, you say, "Look. I love you very much. And I don't want you to leave home. But we do have to have certain rules in place to make sure that the household runs smoothly, and also to keep you safe. Let's talk about it -- maybe if you get a better understanding as to the reasoning behind the rules, it'll help."

Is there any one particular situation or incident that tends to trigger this threat?

Oh... well, if she runs away is she aware that not only will she have no internet access, but she'll also have no roof over her head, running water, warm (or cold) food, etc....?

Maybe you could take her to a homeless shelter and let her see exactly what kind of life a run away can end up having.

I like Krista's idea.

Does she have a plan of where she will live, what she will do for money, etc...? Running away is serious business. It may depend on your area, but I believe the police would be more than willing to pick her up from where ever she is and drag her butt home.

What is her reasoning for wanting to run away? What is her issue at home and how can you and her come up with a plan together to resolve her issues?

It usually happens when she is being punished (I take away internet access, usually for one night) that she makes this threat.
