DId you go by the book, bend the rules a bit or not wory about it? Personally I find alot of older women or people with lots of kids find the amount of food your not supposed to eat quite laughable

I'd tell your mother and MIL there is nothing laughable about giving birth to a stillborn baby. Give them the Listeria pamphlets if they still don't get it.

I followed the listeria food guide the midwives gave me on the first appointment. I could think of nothing worse than killing my baby because i ate food containing listeria..there is no amount of soft serve icecream worth that.
I ate heaps of carbs (cereal, bread, pasta) and craved watermelon. I forced myself to stay away form the deli section at the shops or I'd start sooking about cold prawns and sliced ham.

I didn't bend the rules. I figured I only had to avoid a few things for a few months. Out of obligation and love for my children, I chose to be as healthy as I could be. As far as calorie intake, I let my weight from appointment to appointment guide me. I was eating so many fruits and veggies that I didn't have to worry about other foods. I seriously drank a gallon of water a day. I honestly believe it had an effect on my children's healthy, intelligence, and physical abilities; they had the best nutrition possible when they were being "built".

I'm vegetarian, so no issues with deli meats. The main issue I had was I was violently sick for 7 months of my pregnancy, I lost 15 lbs in the first two months. All I could eat was macaroni and cheese and salted crackers. Once I could stomach (some) food I ate cajun spiced perogies and what I call a veggie poutine (homemade fries, tomatoes, green onions, sour cream and soy-based gravy) I did drink coffee, but only one a day. My daughter was born a week late weighing 7lbs 8ozs and I was told the week before she would probably only weigh 6lbs 5oz at most!

At first I craved veggies so I ate tons of those. Then in the middle of the pregnancy I craved french fries and ice cream and it was over from there! I was careful with caffiene. Limited to half a cup of coffee a week (at church, the serve the best coffee) and I would have a coke every now and then but never more than one a day. I drank sweet tea all day long (from the South, what can I say?) but it was decaf. I ate a lot of shrimp but not any other seafood. Just can't give up shrimp...too prevalent in the cajun cooking I so enjoy to prepare and serve! Baby was perfectly healthy. In fact the doc joked that he was going to do a study linking high birth weight to consumption of french fries!

I stayed away from any foods that could have potential dangers towards my baby , soft white cheeses ( my fave ) , raw fish ( also my fave ) NO coffee , soft serves ect ect ect.
I eat mostly fresh fruit , veg, limited seafood , good quality meats .
I also drank 2 liters before pregnancy so it hasn't been much of a change i find i feel really sluggish if i dont drink enough water .
I just feel i dont want to endanger my child's life in any way , i want to give it the best start even if that includes giving up my fave foods in the world !

I agree most of it is crazy and some people ive told the guidelines to are in total shock they just go way over the top. Your supposed to drink so much extra water but I could never bring myself to do that. It makes me feel sick I tried at the start of my pregnancy. I drink very little liquids in one day and I just cant change that part of me

I stayed away from seafood, alcohol, caffeine, soft cheese, soft serve....but i still had deli meats (in mod). I craved lemons! Ate one a day for the whole pregnancy lol. Listeria is pretty uncommon in Australia i got told by the midwives. Better to be safe than sorry tho. Pregnancy is really such a short time to go without (even if it doesnt feel like it at the time)

I don't like most of the thing pregnant women "aren't supposed to eat." I don't eat deli meats, I hated ice cream while I was pregnant, I didn't have much of a sweet tooth and don't drink coffee or tea. I think that was the main reason why I had it so easy...but that soda...I think I was more tempted to drink it because I couldn't have it...I liked sneaking it. lol. I sound crazy but I really think it was all the "Drink water...don't drink that, if you're thirsty, drink water!" that really made me hate water =]

good on you guys! I ate almost everything first pregnancy except limited chocolate a bit and no ham etc, this time m still eating most things just in moderation. I ate tuna every day last time around now I am just eating it maybe once a week, chocolate I ate a little much on christmas, coffee I had half a cup, my day care provider said its ok to break the rules lol. I wont touch seafood this time or last I only like prawns though. I drank small amunt of alcohol last time this time Im not drinking. I eat coleslaw and potato salad in small amounts and cold chicken on a roll if I feel like it. Although my mother and mother in law still think im going over the top lol

Everything! Haha...I did skip lunch/deli meat and I don't like seafood so I didn't have to worry about that.

I slowed down on the processed foods and cut out fast food out of my diet quite a bit.

However, I ate tons of chocolate and spicy foods.. I even ate sushi. I ate most of what I would every other day of my life.. I figured that people in other countries eat really spicy food and sushi while pregnant and their babies are fine, and if my kid didn't make a fuss about it then why shouldn't I eat it?

I wanted nothing but bagles with cream cheese and fruit. I lived on just that for 6 1/2 months! I tried to eat the food my Fiance cooked for me, he likes hearty meals with meat...he cooks a lot of meat...and I would be like, "It's good" while gagging and running to the bathroom. lol. At around 7 months, I wanted McDonalds Quarter Pounder with Cheese only and the french fries and Coke....My Fiance didn't want me to have soda so I drank it while I was at work =] By the time I was 33 weeks, I was in the hospital and on bedrest and I ate everything the hospital had to offer! Their food was great. I ate what I wanted... I didn't eat protein because I couldn't stand it....I ate all the bagles I wanted, and not the wheat ones like I was advised to. I had sushi on my 21st b-day and I was 4 months pregnant. I didn't drink, but I craved Oatmeal Stout for the longest time during my pregnancy....I still haven't gotten one and my baby is 6 1/2 months now =]
