What do I do when my 10 year old daughter won't finish her homework?

Help, my 10 year old daughter repeatedly doesn't do her homework, or if she does it, she turns it in late. She is in 5th grade this year and I feel like I need to nip the problem in the bud now, or she will really have issues next year. The have student planners at her school that they are supposed to write their homework down in each day so parents can verify that everything is done. But she doesn't write anything down, or if it is, she tells me that she did it at school and it's in her desk. I've already told her that tonight she will have to complete everything that hasn't been done and turn it in tomorrow, and I have taken TV away (which she doesn't really watch during the week anyways). How do I get the point across how important it is to get her homework done everyday?

Unfortunately I am not able to pick her up from school right now, also the school has a policy for children that are picked up after school, they are all sent to 1 room, instead of the parents picking them up from their classrooms.

Is it possible to set up a meeting with her teacher and discuss consenquences at the schools end for not handing in homework? The natural consenquence would be a drop in grades , some kids need to feel their own consenquences from their choices then they can own it, otherwise its a power stuggle and it feels to them as if their being told what to do.

Maybe sit down with your daughter once a week and do a family meeting and discuss any issues your having and maybe see if you can incourage her to come up with a plan to change things around. Hear what she has to say you will be surprised about how much kids do care and want to do well.

Are you able to talk to her teacher? Do you pick her up from school?

When I pick my kids up we don't leave school until they have checked their bags to make sure the homework comes home or I talk to the teachers. That way you know what needs to be done and then when you get home you make sure all the homework is done before TV, computer etc.
