What do I tell my six year old, when some kid says they don't like her skin color?

Apparently there has been a kid who told my child they don't like her skin color by its ugly. She doesn't seem to be bothered by it, however this is the second time it has happened (different kid). I've told her that she is beautiful and that everyone is made different. Also that there are people out there that say hurtful things and to just walk away. She has told the teacher, but it seems to be bothering me more so than her. She also informed me that there has been a girl bothering her at recess, once again she has told the teacher, however this girl has continued to make comments and taunt her. What should I tell her, besides stay away, unless she is approached then she needs to stick up for herself?

Thank you Jodi, I will be speaking with the teacher and the principal regarding this. It breaks my heart to hear her speak of color, when we have never thought of it being an issue....at least not this early in life. Thanks again.

If I were you, I'd actually approach the school and the teacher to find out what their policy is on dealing with this behaviour. No matter what the differences in students, there should be a program in place accepting all differences, and ensuring each child's individual differences are respected. So talk to the teacher and find out how they have managed the situation with the children in question. Yes, our children do need to stick up for themselves to a degree, but they also need to be taught acceptance of others. Unfortunately, some children don't learn this in their narrow-minded homes, so it becomes the school's job to instil some social values in them, or at least to ensure that unacceptable discriminatory behaviour is not occurring in the school amongst the children.
