What do you do if your child seems constantly unhappy?

My son is almost 11 and he constantly seems somewhat unhappy. My son is an only child and in my opinion has life pretty good; he is not spoiled but has a lot. At home he seems happy more than when he is not, but when he is around other people or in public it almost seems like he thinks it is uncool to smile, be happy, or excited about anything. He always finds something to complain about or be negative about even when you may think there is no downside. Thiis is no way to live a happy life, and I fear may lead him to associate with the wrong crowd. I'm wondering if he is depressed or if it is just his personality? Should I seek counseling, and if so what kind?

Just by a short description, sounds like he is just shy and is worried about what others think of him. My son will be 11 soon and he acts like that sometimes. Boys start getting moody around this time, hormones are crazy. My child is a very happy cheery boy, but around his friends and other kids he's we'll reserved and embarrassed. I personally wouldn't worry about it.
