What do you do to make your kids eat the food that is served to them?

I couldn't call my daughter a picky eater coz she prefers simple dishes like a cured pork, or a fried fish but the problem is I don't find this kind of meal (it's not even a meal) healthy. She hates veggies and I couldn't make her eat even a small slice of squash.

So, what do you do to make your kids eat the food that is served to them? Do you give in to their requests or leave them alone until they feel hungry?

I think kids will eat if they are hungry. Picky eating is only a first world problem. I've noticed my son goes through hungry fazes (prob due to growth spurts) and I just throw healthy food at him then. He eats it like no tomorrow. Sometimes he's just a grazer.
I've always tried not to stress to much about his eating. I think they can pick up on your anxiety, and use it for attention.
Also, I always eat dinner WITH my son. Think monkey see, monkey do. If your daughter always see's you eating the freaky vegies and enjoying them, eventually she'll except them too.
I think too, we need to teach kids that it is ok to have treats sometimes, as well as the healthy stuff.
I let my son choose a treat when he has made a 'good effort' with his dinner. By good effort I refer to his over all enthusiasm for the meal, more than the cleaning up of his plate.
And don't forget the portion size. One portion is the fist size of the person eating it. A toddlers's fist is tiny. a dinner is usually one portion protein and three portions vegie. I think as parents we can load to much onto the plate.

Just yesterday I made a deal with her through keeping a jar of good deed, like if she eats well and veggies, a penny puts in that jar would consequence a treat out. I think it works coz she did have a good meal yesterday and even finished her homeworks without a fuss.
