Moms: What do you say to your kid when they write random letters on a page and then ask you what words they make? At first I thought he was testing me to see if I knew what words he 'thinks' he wrote, but then I realized he's just writing random letters in hopes of making an actual word! So far I've done my best to say, "well those aren't real words, but good job practicing writing your letters!"- am I crushing his little heart when I do that? I want to be honest but also don't want to come across negative!

My son does that too I simply tell him that it's not a word. I have explained every word needs at least one vowel and consonant. You could make up words as say "well if it was a word it would sound like this", then you can review the sounds each letter makes that he's written out. For more fun have him come up with a definition for his new word, and practice using it in sentences. Otherwise you could give him words that he can spell phonetically, or give him a word like rake, and them see if he can spell bake. Just keep it fun so he doesn't lose interest!

How old is he? You could use it as an opportunity for a teaching experience and teach him some words to write, and explain how the sounds of the letter make up the word you just wrote.

When my nieces do that, I just say, "Well that sure doesn't look like English! Let me see if I can read it. Hmm, F-S-H-L-A-P, I guess that would say, fshlap. That sounds fishy. I wonder if it's fish language." They think it's great and will write lots more for me to "read".
