What does a mom do when her only child tells her he doesn't have anyone to play with at school recess?

I'm heart-broken when I my 6-year old, only child, tells me he doesn't have anyone to play with at recess. Everyone has friends that they play with except him. What can I do? How can I help him? I'm a teacher and I know how mean little kids can be on the playground. Unfortunately my son doesn't go to the same school that I teach at.

I would first start with the teacher and see if you can get the child's parents name and maybe phone number. If you pick your child up from school you could watch to see if you see any parents of kids your son likes and try to talk to them. Kindergarten is a hard year in trying to connect with friends' parents because you have no idea who these people are. Another thing that helped us learn friends and parents was joining in sports.....We got to learn lots of parents names through soccer, tball, etc. This can also be another way for your son to get to know some more kids that go to the school.

I first would ask more questions. My kids would say the same thing and then when I started asking more about their day and what they did. I started to learn that they actually did have many friends that they played with throughout the day. I would also talk to the teacher and find out if he is playing with others or if he is by himself. One thing you could do no matter if he has friends to play with or not is to set-up a play group with some of the kids in his class.

Thank you so much for your response. I will keep that in mind. I don't know how I would approach the child's parents or set up these play dates if I don't know the parents...can you help? :)
