Here are some links to sites with some Information about Downs.
You need to be proactive in their life, and do things such as Physical Therapy (Water Physio is excellent) and they can have health issues such as heart problems.
I personally would also think of who will care for them once I'm gone, while people with Downs can certainly grow up to become independent people, they do generally need some level of help in everyday life.

I can't believe they suggested abortion as an option!! They have no way of telling if your baby will have Downs until baby is born and even then they will not be able to assess the severity of Downs until baby is older. I know you must be sooo scared and anxious about your future and your family but if it is of any comfort, every child with Downs that I have known is an incredibly sweet, loving human being.

Oh wow Daniela, what a difficult time for you. I was offered an amnio when I had my daughter, simply because of my age, and I chose not to because there is no way, no matter what the result, I could have aborted anyway. But to do this as a single mother, that's tough for you all.
DO you have family and friends as a support network? Perhaps you need to try and find a support group in your area?
I wish you all the best :)

Oh yes. When I had my first baby, her amnio came back with a probability of Down's. Then my OB did a regular ultrasound and was concerned so he referred me to a specialist who could show me in detail how my baby was developing. It was fascinating! He knew exactly what to look for though he reminded me that even his examination was an educated guess and we never know the true health until baby is born. (She turned out perfectly healthy, no Down's whatsoever)

Yes, it sounds like checking for downs syndrome. I think you should have a further talk to your doctor. It is only a sign it *might* be down syndrome, but the test isn't a definitive answer, and not always terribly accurate. However, I am surprised he didn't offer you an amnio if there was concern? Maybe he did?
