What is a good way to stop thumbsucking?

My 7-year-old daughter stopped sucking her thumb when she wanted to wear fingernail polish and I wouldn't let her because I told her it was dangerous if she sucked it off.
Not working with my 9-year-old. He hides under his blanket (even during the summer) and sucks away. We've tried hot sauce; he washed it off and is now more adventurous with spicy foods. A co-worker mentioned that she still sucked her thumb in junior high, and when she got braces they put this spiky things on the back of her teeth and that got her to stop. Going to talk to the dentist about that next time we go in.
My daughters teeth are fine, but my sons are pretty crooked in the front.

My daughter who is 8 was sucking her thumb quite a bit. For us the answer was those kids make-up kits with washable nail polish, I told her that if she wanted to look pretty she could not suck her thumb anymore because she is a big girl now. We made it a ritual to polish her nails every morning and she stopped sucking her thumb immediately.
