What is the best convertible car seat to fit a large baby with cloth diapers?

My 5 month old is off the charts for length (28") and 95th percentile for weight (18.5 lbs). We use bum genius 3.0 diapers on him and because of this, he doesn't fit in his infant car seat very well anymore. We're looking for a good convertible car seat that won't pinch his chubby thighs and that will have the strap slack needed to fit over his diapers and snow suit (we live in cold Buffalo!) Any advice?? Thanks!

Love, Love, Love the Britax Marathon! That's the one we have and we wouldn't use anything else! Well worth the money!

I have a safety 1st carseat, and I really like it. It only has one set of holes for the shoulders, and all you have to do to adjust for height is pull the lever in back, and move it up or down, then adjust the straps accordingly.  We got ours at Walmart, I think the average cost of all the places is around $150.

My son is now 9 years old, but he was cloth diapered and we used the Cosco Alpha Omega and loved it. It is still available when I googled it.

Britax Marathon here too. We install them where I work and that is the most popular one, let alone that it has great ratings etc. You can get a new one on Ebay for much cheaper, it may be a close out from previous year or something but still new and safe nonetheless!

My son was large at 9 months and so we got the Britax Boulevard. I love it! there is side padding that can be moved (or removed if necessary) and it covers babys up to 33lbs in rear facing position while going to 60lbs in the front facing position. it is on the pricy side, but it works so well and my son is still using it. cleaning is a bit of a process but it is dueable. I definitly recommend it, in fact, i am planning on getting on for my daughter before she hits 6 months old.

My older son, now 2, was out of his small, bucket seat at three months because of the same problem. Over 28 inches by 15 weeks, and he also wore cloth diapers. Plus we live in Calgary, so snowsuit and all! We got the Eddie Bauer convertible carseat, goes from rear facing to forward, to booster seat. It's been great and he is still in it today (because believe it or not, the growing will slow down!)

Oh one more thing we obviously have a need for big coats here too (see the pic) & they fit just fine in the seats too!

Britax Marathon is a perfect choice, the Roundabout is good too (we have both) but the Marathon will last longer (taller hight & bigger weight limits). Our 11 month old is rear facing in the Roundabout (for another few weeks until I can FINALLY turn her around) & Our 32 month old (21/2 years old) is in the Marathon & will be until he is too tall & his sister needs it! They cost a bit more but are rated very highly for safety & look nicer than some others, I think.

I just wanted to vote in for the Britax carseats too!  We have big boys and have used the Marathon for both.  Safest seats on the market and fully, and easily adjustable straps.

I don't do the cloth diapers.. but my 5 month old son is ....scary as this is... larger than yours!! Already 30 inches and just under 20lbs as of today... we use the Britax Decathlon and I couldn't be happier with it!

A couple of choices that will allow you to keep your baby rear facing until he hits the weight or age requirements are First Years True Fit, Britax Marathon, Evenflo Triumph Advanced, Recaro Como/Singo and Sunshine Kids Radian. All of them rearface to 35lbs and harness until 65 lbs. There are a few different prices depenfding on what you need.

CHeck out the Graco Nautilus.  My BF told me about it and it has great features.  It uses a 5 point harness up to 60 pounds, has three reclining positions for the little ones and then can convert to a high back booster after 60 lbs.  It is a little pricey but it would most likely be the last seat you would need to buy.  Reviews i have read on it are very good and it is supposed to be as safe as Britax seats but slightly cheaper.  They are also available at Target and Toys R Us

My son (who's now 6.5) was a big guy, too. We got the a seat that would fit him in the harness up to 65 lbs...there seem to be a lot more choices available in that category now, but go for the highest weight with the harness that you can. My little guy was 24.5 lbs by 6 months and was always way off the charts until age 3. Now he is big, but is on the growth charts. Best of luck!

That's exactly like my 5 month old son.. Except he's just a little bigger, lol.. I have such a hard time getting him into his infant car seat as well.

absolutely the britax marathon! Perfect for big babies. Most are only rated up to 45 lbs with harness this one is the only one up to 65lbs. My son is 28mths and wieghs 43 lbs so he def needs this one. I bought it when he was 6mths old because we knew he was going to need it!

Britax Marathon convertable car seat.

I have one and love it! The weight is 5-65 lbs. (I have a chubby baby too!)

It also has one of the highest ratings for side impact accidents.

It seems like a very comfortable car seat to for the baby and has a removable cover so you can throw it in the wash.

If you do consider that one...make sure you get the Marathon. The back of the seat is higher then their different model called roundabout.
