Please do not give your baby any cough syrup. These don't have dosages for children under the age of 2 for a reason. The best way to help a cough is vics vapor rub. Put it on the soles of your child's feet (liberally) and the put socks on. It sounds weird but works. Also put a vaporizer in the room (up high where little hands can't get burned. Lastly, buy "simple Saline" at your local drug store. This is a saline nasal mist that dries congestion. You're kid won't be a fan of this. But, it will help and is toxic-free.

I've never used any medication when mine's had a cold. What I do is spend a lot of time in the bathroom with the shower running on full blast. The steam will shake things loose and help get things expelled from their lungs.
The FDA and AAP have revised their recommendations on treating a cold in a child under 2. They have strongly advised against using any type of cold or cough medicine in children under the age of 2. http://www.aap.org/new/kidcolds.htm

I was told from an ER doctor when my son had creupe that cough syrups don't do anything, you have to go after the source of the cough. He reccomended Dimetapp to dry up the post nasal drip which in turn takes care of the cough.

am I the only one who thinks it sucks that we have to resort to portions of adult doses rather than just having cold medicine for our little babies. i makes me so mad having to go to the doc everytime his nose runs off his face

I don't think you can give your child anything right now. From what I understand under 4 there is nothing you should give your child for a cold. My daughter use to have many ear infections and colds being in daycare and when she was 18 mo an older dr told me to give her Robotussin DM for kids of course well she was having seizures which I was unaware of at the time and this made them worse. The only thing I am thankful for is that it finally gave us an answer to her real issues. Kiana has epilepsy and what I assumed was stuffyness from a cold was actually congestion and her lungs filling with flem she also had ear infections at the same time too. She has had nothing but tyenol for almost 2 years now. That is my experiance but from what I gather in the past few years they have said you can give them nothing because decongestiants are not good for infants/

try a 1/2 tsp of zyrtec syrup. That will help the runny nose. It is a antihistimine.
A tried and true remedy for the cough is to put vicks vapor rub on the child's feet, cover with white socks, let the child sleep this way. My 9 year old daughter asks for this remedy every time she has a cough. It works!! It sounds like allergies. Good luck.

Hi Angie, Well, I have 3 kids and a wonderful family doctor which I trust 100%. My 5 year old daughter Alexa always had a cold and what I would do is make sure she drank enough juice and water and lots of kleenex. You have to be really careful with cough syrup. Do you have a good doctor? You just have to have patience while your little one gets better. I did not have this problem with my first 2 kids as they ate much better than Alexa. Alexa still is very difficult with eating fruits and vegetables but she does not get sick as often. What happens when you give them cough syurp is that it suppresses their cough and it makes it worse the next day. You might want to try a humidifier, either cold or hot mist depending if your child has a fever. Hope all goes well for you. Keep me posted. Take care, Manon
