What is the best way to get my 18 months daughter to fall asleep on her own, and stay asleep in her own bed?

I started a routine with my daughter a few weeks ago or more when it is bedtime. We read a few stories and I turn on her music thing. It worked pretty well for a week or so, but now not so much. She will cry herself to sleep and within a few hours she is awake screaming again. And will scream for a long time. If I go and lay with her, she goes back to sleep rather quickly. After I get up to go sleep in my own bed she is awake in just a hour or so. I just want to sleep in my bed with just my husband.

Our third kid is on the way towards the end of September, I don't want to be doing this with a newborn.

Adele we have thought about that, he is 5 years older. I don't want him to feel like we are "making" him sleep with his sister. But I do think it is something to try. Thanks
